Breast Milk Storage Guidelines

Get step-by-step instructions.

When you’re storing breast milk, you always want to start with clean hands!  Wash yours in hot soapy dishwashing liquid and then dry with a clean kitchen cloth or bath-towel so that you don’t have paper towel residue on your hands.

With my hands clean, I try to take the freshly pumped breastmilk and pour it carefully into a breast milk storage bag.  I hold the bag open with one hand and then I pour carefully with the other – trying not to spill!  And yes, I have cried over split milk (aka liquid gold).

Freezing Breast Milk

In the video, I share the AAP recommendations on freezing breast milk.  There is a lot of detail so I put up some graphics to help you guys out.

Thawing Breast Milk

Freezing is just the tip of the ice berg (ha ha, terrible joke I know, sorry!).  How you thaw is a very important step in this process.  Never thaw or heat breastmilk in boiling water or in the microwave!  Watch the video for more instructions…
