Pureed Baby Foods

Once you’ve determined that your baby is ready for solids, you will begin to give your baby Stage 1 baby foods.  Although we use the term “solids”, these first foods really amount to liquidy, soupy types of foods that are very easy for a young baby to swallow.  So the name solids is a bit of a misnomer, and there is nothing really “solid” about them because they should be so liquidy that you can almost drink them.  Stage 1 pureed baby foods include single fruit and vegetable purees, and different types of single grain baby cereal, most usually rice.  You’ll want to introduce one food at a time, waiting at least four days to make sure your baby doesn’t exhibit any adverse reaction to any food.

You can either buy or consider making homemade baby food at this stage. In this video, I try to provide an easy, stress-free, and fun guide to beginning this amazing stage in your baby’s life.

What stage 1 baby foods did you opt for to start, and what did your baby prefer?  Did you prepare pureed baby goods from scratch?  If not, what brand of baby food did you prefer?  Please add your comments below – l would love to hear from you!

Quick question about solids, my son is 5 months & we are getting ready to start him on solids and I was wondering what the real pros & cons were to starting him with cereal or going straight to veggies & fruit? My doctor told me to avoid the rice cereal since there were some scares about tainted rice, so we would start with oatmeal. If we do start with cereal, how long do we need to stay with it before starting veggies & fruit. Thanks so much for all of your helpful videos!!

HI Dana! I think traditionally, everyone started with cereals and now things have really opened up with alot of folks saying don’t overdo the starch to begin with (because kids tend to depend too much on starch) try to get that diversity of fruits and veggies in there to begin with. One thing you can do is make your fruit or veggie the “base” and then sprinkle in a bit of cereal and pumped milk or formula and that can make for a nice, full meal – that way you get the nutrients from the cereal and the baby is getting different foods. But I do think that many doctors are saying now that you can start with single food fruits and veggies and don’t need to start with cereal as it was in the old days!!! Good luck!! xxo M
