The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of nearly 100,000 expanding toys due to a “serious ingestion hazard.” The marble-sized toys — sold by Dunecraft under the names Water Balz, Growing Skulls, H20 Orbs “Despicable Me” and Fabulous Flowers – can be ingested by a child and expand, leading to intestinal blockages and “severe, discomfort, vomiting, [and] dehydration and could be life-threatening.” So scary!
An 8-month-old Texas girl swallowed a Water Balz in August 2011, resulting in an intestinal obstruction. The toys can’t be detected on an x-ray and must be surgically removed.
The toys are designed to absorb water and grow up to 400 times their original size, and were sold in packages of six in green, yellow, red, blue and black colors at retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Five Below, Hobby Lobby, Lakeshore Learning Materials, Microcenter, Urban Outfitters Direct, Wegmans and other stores nationwide, and online at amazon.com, incrediblescience.com, keyporthobbies.com, americantoystores.com and other websites.
